Getting Orthodontic Braces to Straighten Teeth

You must be filled with a lot of queries before getting orthodontic treatment. Here are some of the common queries and answers to them.

What can I expect during my orthodontic treatment?

At first, your orthodontist will determine your specific needs accordingly your mouth will be given for complete evaluation. Your teeth will be cleaned and your dentist will make a visual inspection to see if there are any dental issues or discuss your oral history. Teeth impressions will be taken along with the x-ray of your entire jaw structure and teeth.

Once your specific needs are determined, your dentist will offer the most appropriate treatment for your issue. The procedure completely depends on the skills of the orthodontist you picked up to perform the treatment. In most of the cases, teeth are compacted together. In this case, you need spacers that will be inserted to divide the teeth little. There are cases when you have too many spaces in between the teeth. Some even have bone issues which can be fixed with surgery.

What should be done after getting orthodontic braces?

Adapting to new situations and things take time. So, it will take time to get used to your braces. You will need a new diet. Sugary and sticky items are not good. Hard foods that need biting with front teeth should be chopped prior so that no force is given to the braces. Given below are some of the items to be avoided:

  • Cut fruits like apples, pears and carrots into small pieces before eating
  • Avoid chewing gums containing sugar
  • Corn on the cob should be avoided
  • Crispy chips
  • Hard foods like nuts
  • Thick bread or pizzas and hamburgers.
